Thanks everyone for your kind words and thanks for using these pictures on a bunch of different blogs. I have been thinking a lot about using these sorts of pictures as a platform to start a larger photo project about the environment and environmentalists. I really want to take portraits of head members of organizations like Earth First and then go to things like Whale Wars. Who knows what I'll end up doing!

Great pictures and protests! I used some of them in this weeks Energy Action Coalition Video Blog with a link to the blog post. http://www.powershift09.org/blog/

Great news about Bank of America acknowledging the harm they were causing by funding MTR.

Keep up the great work

[...] Photos available here. Mountaintop removal coal mining is the most destructive coal extraction process, where mountains are clear cut, blasted with tons of pounds of dynamite, then the “overburden”, or what used to be the mountain, is shoved into the streams carrying much of our nation’s freshest source of water. The coal is then extracted cheaply from what used to be the mountain, leaving a virtual moonscape. This process and the chemicals involved poisons the air and water of surrounding communities, resulting in cancer, asthma, a plethora of other sicknesses, and death. [...]

i like the idea of tying the holiday dress with the subject of the protest. use of coal, "clean" technology included, and those who finance this program is contentious as we explore the alternatives for powering our society. though i believe all alternatives should be on the table, it appears coal is a lose/lose situation as it costs more energy than it provides and has a negative environmental impact.
