Night Fishing on Lake Victoria
by Administrator
First off a few people wanted to see a picture of me in Kenya, so here it is:

This series of pictures follows a boat of net fishermen from 8pm or so at night till dawn, then the Usenge Beach area during the fish trading, when all the boats return. The night shots are extremely difficult because it’s pitch black and they don’t use lights… I can’t use radio triggered flashes in the middle of the night, because that’s just mean and they have a wicked hard job, so I just sort of relied on the random headlamps being used and the moon before it set. Since I was out with the fishermen all night I still haven’t slept, so can’t really stay up to write more tonight. Some other time I will be able to expand on the issues with depleted fisheries and ownership disputes with Uganda… Now I get to go to sleep.

the lights off in the distance are the lantern trap fishermen

Beautiful work Ian.
Great shots Ian, looks like an amazing trip. Have you seen the documentary “Darwin’s Nightmare” about fishing in Lake Victoria? Really interesting, you should check it out.

The eyes on the fish!
What a great adventure! Are those red fish eyes in the bottom of the boat?! I can’t wait to see what you can do on a night out with the trap fishermen! Missing you!
I have not, but thanks for the suggestion! I hope it’s on google video.
Thanks Brittany! Those are in fact the fish eye reflections. The trap fishermen use big lanterns to attract the fish… so I would actually have some light to work with!
Thanks! yeah it is a creepy place to be when you get tired, youre with ten men who speak no english in the middle of a very large lake and step in fish wherever you go.
Wonderful. Every set of photos and words let’s us know you are doing well. What a world we have. Glad you Ian are in it and out in it! PAX
Nice pics, I know how hard this can be without flash, you caught some good moments with available light.
Thanks Nic
Thanks Nick, it was a wicked fun adventure. Sort of have to step out of your comfort zone though to spend the night on these little boats, especially because they are fishing mostly illegally.
Fishing is a nice sport and it is a good past time too. I enjoy fishing specially during weekends.
