Pinhole Portait Project
by Ian Maclellan
I am going to start submitting some stuff for a Tufts University photography blog and sort of want to start my submissions off with some shebang, so I figure I should start a new unique project. I have a brand spanking shiny new pinhole camera sitting in my room that needs to be used. I also go to a university with thousands of faces that I don’t know that could make some cool portraits… Put these two things together and I got myself a pinhole portrait assignment of Tufts students and faculty. I am currently designing my announcement for tuftslife.com and am split about whether to give a specific time when people could come and meet me in a specific common place like the quad or just put a call out asking if there is anyone interested in modeling and meeting at a time of their choosing where they choose.
Here is my rough draft:
I am working on a pinhole portrait project of Tufts University community members(students, teachers, faculty, etc..) and need a variety of people to stand for portraits in any setting on campus(or off campus). I am looking for all subjects: this is not a beauty shoot, but a project to capture Tufts eccentricities and normality in all forms. The pinhole portraits would be taken at your convenience in terms of times, locations, costume, and content, if you want to have it shot without leaving your room then that’s where I’ll take the shot. All photos will be shot with a large format pinhole camera and would require you to stand relatively still for 1-500 seconds, but besides the exposure time, would be very quick. The photos would be used as part of a portfolio of similar pinhole photographs and you would receive a digital scan and dark room silver print of the image. Compensation will come in the form of prints of your choosing. If you are at all intrigued by the sound of this project email me at ian.maclellan@tufts.edu or check out my website for examples of work: http://maclellanimages.com/
It’s a tricky thing to phrase… but I’m going to mull it over for a little while and see if I can come up with something that conveys what I am trying to work on.
Let me know if anybody out there has any suggestions, because sometimes it is hard for me to explain my intentions, since they make perfect sense to me, but probably don’t to everyone.
Thanks!

Also just wanted to note that I meant to say shazam and not shebang… sorry for the confusion, I get the mixed up all the time.
