I’m Conflicted and Need Help Editing

by Ian Maclellan

So I bit the bullet and paid the $60 submission fee to enter the Hey Hot Shot! contest for new members and now I just have to pick a series of three images… I am pulled in a bunch of different directions and am unsure of what sort of work really fits in with their “genre” so to speak. I don’t even know whether to submit film, pinhole, or digital shots for goodness sake. I’m lost…

What seems to be an important part of winning submissions based upon the archives is the strength of the artists statement. I have really no experience writing such things and need to pick a direction on that. Some of the stories I have been thinking about exploring are more personal, like the Lincoln Workers series or maybe even more specifically the Lincoln Conservation series:

Lovelane Theraputic Horse Farm

And if I decided to go the direction of the Lincoln Conservation Commission I would add in shots like this:

Maybe I could even just make it a series on Lincoln in general and throw in this shot?:

I also really like some of the shots I took in Israel last year and could potentially do three of those. It would be hard for me to write about them and I was thinking of taking an approach like The Holy Land for Atheists or something…

I would even be happy doing a series on Groton ice formations:

I could even do triple and double exposures, or Revere Beach Pictures(though that would be better once I cover summer when there are actually people there), or protest pictures…

This is amazingly stressful, I don’t feel fancy enought to enter and wish I hadn’t already paid the fee!

EDITED TO ADD: I think after writing this and picking some images and thinking about what I have to write I want to do some of the Lincoln Worker Shots. I will talk about how it was my first real job and how the images focus on other younger working folks. It is rare for me to do portraits so close with people I really got to know and feel that those will be my strongest entry besides going with pinhole shots… Sadly there is already a pinhole entry and two pinholes could never win. I guess I should really stop thinking like that and think about what I feel is my best work… good night!
